Weekend Box Office: 'Real Steel' KO's Competition

It was a slow weekend at the box office overall with only one major mainstream title coming out, but that one major mainstream title did pretty well for itself. For all the numbers on the fighting robots, scheming politicians and injured dolphins, read on.

"Real Steel" took the top spot this weekend as expected, considering it was the only title with mainstream appeal (and a really big advertising push). The fighting robot flick drew a healthy $27.3 million domestically and an almost equal haul overseas. The movie was helped by its family-friendly appeal (the father-son storyline had a lot of parents taking kids to the theater) and the reviews weren't as bad as you would expect for a movie about boxing robots.

In second place was George Clooney's "The Ides of March," a political thriller also starring Ryan Gosling, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and others. "Ides" drew a solid $10.4 million over the weekend, almost recouping its budget (about $12.5 million). The reviews for the film have been very good, and the cast may be the best of the year, so "Ides" could have legs for a while.

"Dolphin Tale" hung on for a third place finish this weekend, coming in just behind "Ides" with $9.2 million. That brings the cumulative total for the family film to $49.1 million domestically, and continues a successful run thus far. Also heading into its third week was "Moneyball," which grossed $7.5 million for a cume of $49.3M, putting it just ahead of "Dolphin Tale," but likely to fall behind after next weekend.

Coming in fifth place was "50/50," the cancer comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. The movie pulled in $5.5 million, a modest drop of about 39% from its opening weekend. The cume for "50/50" now stands at $17.3 million. Also notable this weekend was "Courageous" which, despite suspicions that it was heavily front-loaded, held fairly well for a drop of 49% to bring in $4.6 million in its second weekend.
